The vast semi-arid stretch of land in South Africa is called the Karoo. The Karoo is devided in two, known as the Klein Karoo (Small Karoo) and the Groot Karoo (Great Karoo). The latter is where we found ourselves during the summer of 2007. This particular year it had wonderful rainfall and anyone who witnessed rain in the Great Karoo, know what a wonderful sight that can be. We chose this route because the National road is dangerous, fast and boring. We drove the gravel road from Cape Town to Johannesburg. The photo below was a hundred kilometres from Ceres where we first climbed onto the gravel road.
